2021’ BH Score: 94 /Tasted: Jun 10, 2023/Drink: 2033+/Issue: 91/♥Sweet spot
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: One again there is a smoky component to the nose of acacia, lilac, rose petal, citrus and a hint of sandalwood. The racy, precise and beautifully sleek middleweight flavors are not quite as concentrated though they do display focused power on the lemony and saliva-inducing finish that delivers first-rate depth and persistence. This tightly coiled effort should amply repay extended keeping yet isn’t so compact that it couldn’t be enjoyed after 5-ish or so years.
2020’ BH Score: 96 /Tasted: Jun 10, 2022 /Drink: 2032+ /Issue: 87
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: A slightly riper mix features notes of both white and yellow peach, acacia blossom and plenty of exotic spice nuances, and in particular jasmine. The sleek, intense and beautifully precise broad-shouldered flavors deliver stunningly good length on the compact and superbly well-balanced finale. This is presently very, very backward, which is just as well as more depth does need to develop but that shouldn’t be an issue if at least some forbearance is exercised. Assuming this stunner of a Bâtard fulfills its potential, the word brilliant comes to mind.
2019’ BH Score: 95 /Tasted: Jun 10, 2021/Drink: 2034+/Issue: 83/♥Don’t miss!
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: More restrained aromas include those of a variety of floral elements that combine with notes of freshly cut apple, anise and a discreet hint of wood. The equally intense but much bigger, richer and more powerful flavors are shaped by a very firm acid spine on the super-saline and wonderfully long finale. This is a big, though not massive, Bâtard that should also age gracefully for a very long time. Even so, it could reasonably be approached after 7 to 8 years. If you can find it, treat yourself.
2018’ BH Score: 93 /Tasted: Jun 10, 2020 /Drink: 2030+ /Issue: 79
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: A mildly exotic array reflects notes of white orchard fruit laced with both white peach and barely perceptible viognier nuances that are also trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. There is good power and punch to the seductively textured middle weight plus flavors that coating the palate with sappy extract on the firm, serious and tightly wound finale. Much like the Corton-Charlemagne, this is more a Bâtard of refinement than muscle that should also age gracefully for years.
2015’ BH Score: 93 / Tasted: Jun 11, 2017 / Drink: 2025+ / Issue: 67
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: A slightly riper nose of exceptionally fresh if slightly tropical aromas consists of white peach, pear, dried apricot and matchstick. There is outstanding richness to the somewhat more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that manage to retain a relatively fine sense of detail on the clean, saline and lingering finish. Morey-Coffinet almost always manages to coax unusually good elegance from their Bâtard and 2015 will only add to that reputation.
2014’ BH Score: 94 Tasted: Jun 15, 2016 Drink: 2026+ Issue: 63 ♥ Don’t miss!
Note: from a .13 ha parcel of vines planted in 1996 and located on the Chassagne side
Tasting note: While here too there is a trace of reduction it’s much more subtle and more easily allows the ripe white orchard fruit, spice and softly oak-scented nose to be appreciated. Once again there is first-rate volume and concentration to the palate staining broad-shouldered flavors that possess stunningly good intensity to the driving and lemony finale that just goes on and on. It’s very clear that this beautifully stylish effort is going to require plenty of bottle age to realize its impressive potential. |
